Dear Expectant Parents,
We are Jason and Amber from Rhode Island. Thank you so much for taking the time to learn a little about us. Ware ecstatic to welcome a child into our home and family. We can’t imagine what you are going through, but we want you to know how much we admire your strength and courage. You have been and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers as you navigate this process.
We are honored that you would consider us as the couple who would get to raise your child. We promise to surround your child with unconditional love, support, stability, and laughter. Thank you again for giving us the opportunity to be a part of your extended family through adoption.
Our Life Together
Our story began when we met at an academic conference in Seattle in 2000. We were friends for 10 years first and have been together ever since. We got engaged under the color of fireworks on the 4th of July and married on a beach in St. Lucia. We are both from Minnesota, but live in Rhode Island with the cutest dogs in the world, Frankie and Spooner. We are both college professors who love helping students learn and discover new things.
From the moment we started dating we talked about having children. We have always talked about adoption as a way of becoming parents. When we had infertility issues, we knew adoption was the right choice for us.
Our lives together have been marked by constant adventures, big and small. Four months into dating we went to Iceland and knew that travel would be a big part of our lives. Since that time, we have traveled to various places in the United States and over a dozen countries. We also love little adventures that include a quick daytrip to a lighthouse, winery, a new restaurant or just exploring a neighborhood or city. We want to share adventures with our child and show them what a wide and wonderful world there is to experience.
A Little About Jason
Jason is the love of my life. He shares his zest for life with the world. He can ignite passion in his students, colleagues, and friends for ideas and knowledge. Jason has a knack for attracting the trust of others because people seem to be constantly asking him for advice or information. He wants to see people achieve their goals. People notice his altruistic character and are drawn to it. If someone needs help they know Jason will be there for them. His huge smile and gregarious and goofy laugh makes everyone feel welcome.
Jason is outgoing and extroverted but sensitive and understanding as well. He will be the adult at the table asking the kids what their favorite subject or pastime is while the rest of the adults are engaged in conversation. I love his curious mind and zest for life. You can see it in our house daily when he is playing with our dogs, chasing them around the house or relaxed in front of the couch enjoying a movie or reading.
We are both college professors. Aside from his teaching responsibilities, Jason spends his time doing research, assisting an advising center on campus, and has spent the past few years taking students abroad to study. Jason says “I have the greatest job in the world. I get paid to think and write about some of the most important issues that impact people. More importantly, I get to share that knowledge with young people. One of the best parts of my day is when I see students make connections between the classroom and the real world.” Jason is fluent in Spanish and plans on speaking Spanish to our child so that s/he will grow up to be bilingual.
A Little About Amber
Amber is the most amazing woman I have ever met. Intelligent, generous, kind, fierce, loyal, and curious are just some of the words that describe her. She is extremely close to her parents and her friends. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for someone she cared about.
She is the best teacher! She is the one that gets students to go beyond their abilities. She is the one that sees in them so much more than they see in themselves. She teaches me to take life with a bit more grain of salt and find joy in the small things. One of the greatest things I love about her is her sense of adventure. She is always game for trying something new, from traveling to a new place to trying new foods. I am in constant awe of her. She is an inspiration to me and those that know her.
Finally, did I mention she is hilarious? I don’t know think there is a day that goes by where I don’t laugh harder and longer because of her. Laughter fills my life constantly and I know it will fill the life of our child.
Before Amber became a college professor she spent several years working in the professional world as a television producer. Amber says the greatest part of her role as a professor is: “helping students tap into their potential and watching them grow and prosper is something that cannot be matched in other professions. I get to directly see the impact I make on young people. In very few careers do you get to see that direct impact.” Because we are college professors we have a lot flexibility in our schedules. Amber currently teaches several courses online so she works from home most of the week. We have schedules worked out so that one of us or both of us will be home on a constant basis.
Home Sweet Home
We absolutely love everything about living in Rhode Island!
Our home is a two-story colonial within an ethnically diverse neighborhood. We love to hang out with friends and entertain where Amber can show off her cooking skills. Our house sits in-between two colleges nearby, an elementary school that is literally around the corner, and a huge park about a block away where kids are constantly playing. We have a neighborhood filled with children and know several of our neighbors with small children that would love to have additional playmates. The atmosphere of our neighborhood is a great place for children to grow up.
Meet Our Dogs, Spooner & Frankie
Spooner is 6 and Frankie is 3. We rescued Spooner over 3 years ago and have had Frankie for just about a year. Both are terrier mixes under 20 pounds. They love going for walks, squeaky toys, cheap hot dogs, belly rubs and snuggling. They like spending time outside with us as well as chasing and wrestling with each other around the house. They are the sweetest dogs in the world and love meeting new people. They are great with kids and can’t wait to be big brothers.
5 Things You Might Be Surprised to Learn About Us
The People We Love
We have both been blessed to have wonderful families. Both sets of our parents have been married for over 40 years. We hope to emulate their longstanding and loving relationship. Our parents live only about 45 minutes apart from each other and can’t wait to create larger family gatherings.
Amber is an only child, but has many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is very close with a couple of her cousins who are like a brother and sister to her. Jason has a younger sister and brother. Jason’s sister is married with two children. Jason’s brother is also married with two sons. We are lucky to be Godparents to one of our nephews. Although our families live a few hours away from us we get together every chance we can. We love having large family dinners, playing board games, and watching/playing sports with them. Our families are extremely excited with our adoption journey and can’t wait to add a new member to our family.
In addition to our family, we are lucky to have good friends in various parts of the country. We spend much of our traveling time going to visit these families. Our closest friends, who live close to us, all have very young children, so our child will have lots of kids around the same age to play with.
Jason has also been part of the Big Brother/Big Sister program for the past 8 years. His “little brother” Zach is an important part of our lives.
