If you are in need of community support, there are a number of resources based in San Antonio that are available to help you.
Nobody should feel alone and unsupported when in an unfortunate situation. Whether in need of emergency shelter, have disabilities but don’t have sufficient care, suffer from problems with mental health and health in general or are a victim of domestic violence, there is help.
Likewise, there are also a number of helpful programs and services if you are in financial need or pregnant. Although many people are aware of the financial burdens that can be associated with adoption, there is less conversation about the emotional needs of those involved in the adoption process. Although many community resources can help you find affordable housing, food and medical care, child care, emotional support programs such as low-cost counseling and extracurricular programs are also available for your benefit.
Whether you are struggling with raising your family or looking for help to address personal challenges, there are public and private resources available that can provide assistance and support.
Types of Resources
San Antonio residents can find a diverse range of services and supports at their disposal, from food pantries to legal services. Some of the available resources available in our community include:
● Medical providers
- Shelters, including emergency and transitional shelters
- Government support programs including WIC and SNAP
- Scholarships and grants
- Educational and extracurricular programs
- Food banks and clothing drives
Reaching Out
At the end of this article, we have provided a list of some of San Antonio’s most prevalent non-profit initiatives and organizations. If you believe you could benefit from the support of any of the organizations listed, do not hesitate to reach out using the contact information that is provided.
Even when we need help, it can be difficult to reach out. If you feel uncomfortable explaining yourself, understand that you do not have to. Many organizations offer drop-in services, without any appointments, applications or lengthy explanations necessary. While drop-in services are increasingly popular, many programs, including government-funded financial assistance may still require applications and proof of income, so it is a good idea to reach out as soon possible to find out about the application process and reduce waiting times.
Get Involved
If you want to support the work of these organizations, the best option is to reach out and see what kind of help is needed the most. Many organizations run on volunteer work and are always looking for more hands to help out.
Additionally, donations are at least partial funding sources for many San Antonio funding organizations, if not the sole source of funding. If you do have money to spare and would like to give back to local initiatives, this is the perfect opportunity to make a real and tangible difference in the lives of your community members. Even without much disposable income, many organizations are looking for donations of canned goods, gently used clothing and other goods that community members need.
Some organizations experience seasons where they are particularly busy (for example, much of the Salvation Army’s fundraising occurs during the holiday season). Other organizations hold events for community members to enjoy. If you are unable to consistently help out, attending seasonal events on occasion can make a difference and help an organization keep up with a busy period.
Finally, you can make a difference by spreading the word about local resources. Even if you don’t need the assistance of charities and government services, you likely know people who do. In some cases, the reason people have not yet reached out for help is because they do not know help is available to them at all.
Simply letting your neighbors and loved ones know that there is a lot of support in San Antonio that offers a wide range of resources which can make a world of difference.
Adoption Alliance as a Resource
Whether you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and looking for support as you prepare for the adoption process, or you are a family interested in expanding your family through the beauty of adoption, we can help.
If you are pregnant and unsure if adoption is the right option for you due to expenses, time restraints or other stressors, we can assure you that we will do everything possible to help you, from providing financial aid during and immediately after pregnancy to providing legal services at no cost to you. Other services we provide include counseling, transportation from appointments, agency visits and information on education regarding adoption. Our services are 100% confidential, meaning you can sleep soundly knowing that your privacy is one of our biggest concerns.
We can also help waiting families by working hard to match them with the right birth parent, and by providing active support at every step, from the earliest background checks to months post-placement visits.
Despite our wide range of adoption and pregnancy-related services, the truth is both birth parents and adoptive families may need additional support when it comes to their adoption. For all parties involved, adoption can become an inaccessible option due to a number of barriers, including financial limitations, emotional difficulties and medical concerns. For this reason, it is recommended to look into services available at other organizations as well as Adoption Alliance in order to eliminate as many barriers as possible and help you have a smooth and seamless adoption process.
