Considering placing your child for adoption?
If you’re pregnant, either planned or unplanned, and are considering adoption we understand this is a difficult time and we’re here to assist you during the entirety of the process. We don’t require the birth father or your parents to be involved in the process, however if it is right for your situation we encourage they be included as part of your support team.
If you have not already done so, your adoption caseworker can help you arrange a visit with your doctor or OB/GYN. If you currently do not have an OB/GYN, we will assist you in finding one that is convenient for you. By consulting your doctor you’ll better understand the progression of your pregnancy, and receive advice on how to properly care for yourself and the unborn child. We suggest using this time to have any questions answered about pregnancy, and share your medical history as well as any medications (if any) you’re currently taking with your doctor.
During this time, you may be experiencing heightened emotions due to the nature of this decision and the hormonal changes occurring in your body. The various emotions you might feel are stress, sadness, fear, uncertainty, and potentially more. Our goal is to ease your stress and relieve you of these emotions by connecting you with a highly-trained adoption caseworker and/or Counselor, who is available to listen to your concerns and be your sounding board.
Your caseworker will also fully explain the adoption process, provide you with all information to make your decision, create an individual adoption plan should you decide to move forward with the adoption of your baby, and walk you through the profiles of waiting families. Our families encompass parents of all ages and any racial backgrounds. If you ever have a question or need immediate assistance, Adoption Alliance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support you!
Learning your options for adoption help
Knowledge is power, and we want to empower you with all necessary and vital information concerning all aspects of pregnancy and the adoption process. Placing your baby up for adoption is not something done alone, but rather with a supportive and caring team.
Our adoption professionals are committed to proactive planning. They’ll review and provide options counseling for the common adoption types, open adoption, semi-open adoption and closed adoptions. Closed adoption is conducted completely anonymously, with no ongoing contact with the adoptive family or baby after placement. Your confidentiality will be paramount. Open adoption allows identifying information to be shared between both parties, along with phone calls, emails, in-person visits and an agreed upon amount of contact after placement.
After deciding on the type of adoption you then get to review pre-approved families, which we hope is the most fulfilling part of the process. Going through adoptive parent profiles gives you an opportunity to be very selective with the family that will be charged with love and care of your baby.
Ultimately, you don’t have to choose a family, however a lot of birth mothers enjoy learning about the family and making the final decision. We work directly with adoptive parents to create profiles that describe their personalities, family dynamic, hobbies, interests, home-life, lifestyle, and more. We create multi-faceted profiles so when you put your child
in a family, you’re 100% confident and secure in your choice.
How to prepare for the relinquishment of your baby
While having a plan securely in place and being fully prepared for the adoption of your baby is very important, it still doesn’t prepare for emotions you’ll feel on the day you relinquish your rights as a parent and the legal rights of the father. When you place your baby in the care of another family, even one of your personal choosing, it’s emotionally complicated and we want to prepare you for this experience.
Thankfully the grief and healing process can begin before you even give birth. Your adoption specialist will help you prepare so you can spend the time during your pregnancy and at the hospital loving your baby. The bond and attachment you’ll feel is natural and you should experience the blissful happiness that accompanies childbirth, and knowing you’re choosing the best life for your little one.
You may struggle with a sense of loss even though you chose this path. It’s ok to feel this very real pain. An unplanned pregnancy comes with three very different decisions, each with its own set of challenging emotions and consequences.
Adoption is a lifelong choice and acknowledging the emotions you’re experiencing and learning to handle them will keep you strong and able to move forward. As always, Adoption Alliance will stay by you every step of the way you’ll never feel alone in this process.
